9 Home Decor Trends for 2022

Over the last 2 years, many of our rooms have had to do a double shift; your kitchen is now your office, a bedroom is now a classroom and the living room is now a gym.

Pandemic life has drastically changed how we view our homes. We have become more purposeful in creating our domestic spaces.

You’ll see this play out in some of the top home decor design trends for 2022. We’re seeing trends lend themselves to a multifunctional, comfortable and cozy home infused with lots of natural elements.

These are the 9 home decor trends we’ve been seeing most in 2022:

1. Minimalism.

If you’re like us, we spent much of the pandemic watching Marie Kondo and the Home Edit. The big lesson? Less is more. This minimalist trend is showing up in design and in our habits.

Consider what minimalism means to you. Less furniture? Less clutter? Minimalism and purging helps reduce chaos and increase the calm. And allows us to focus on pieces that spark joy.

2. Natural materials.

Being stuck inside has made us want to bring the outdoors in. Natural materials are filling the pages of design magazines and our homes in 2022.

Think wood, jute, stone, linen, cotton, or wool. Organic materials provide balance to our technology-heavy lives.

Want to start small? Put some apples in a low woven bowl for a dining table centerpiece.

3. Sustainability.

Environmentally-friendly materials have always been on trend, and this year we’re seeing an increase in recycled materials in furniture and architectural elements.

Over the last 24 months, the supply chain has been interrupted. On top of that, a record number of forest fires, floods and extreme weather events have us rethinking our impact on the environment. We’ve had to find and source more local products (like a Sherwood Park favourite – Driftwood Designs), or buying second-hand and upcycling our furniture. Which is good for our spaces and good for the planet!

4. Contrast.

Even though the use of natural elements is on the rise, we’re also seeing an increase in black accents, which makes for a great contrast!  From lighting, to hardware to doors, designers are choosing pieces that stand out, rather than blend in. One contrasting trend gaining popularity is painting your trim darker than the walls!

5. Bold wallpapers and murals.

Wallpaper has gone in and out of style for the last century, and 2022 is seeing it back on the upswing! Bold, bright florals and art-deco patterns are bringing glamour and elegance to our offices and bathrooms, not to mention a welcome element of fun!

6. Shades of green.

Green helps us feel connected to nature. It can revitalize us and de-stress.

Adding nature-inspired green accents can be easy with paint colour, throw cushions and plants. And if you don’t have a green thumb, not to worry – there are so many artificial options. Fake olive trees are especially hot right now!

7. Beige / “Greige” (grey is out!).

For years it was all about the greys, but now we’re seeing a return to beige. Not everyone is ready to accept the comeback, so we’re seeing lots of “greige” (grey-beige) on walls, or warm off-white options.

8. Non-white kitchens.

While white kitchens will always be considered classic (and we don’t think they’ll ever really go out of style) we’re seeing a rising trend in warm toned kitchens. Beige kitchen cabinets and wood islands are very popular right now.

9. Black or white kitchen appliances.

Stainless steel appliances have long been the number 1 option, but lately we’re seeing many new builds with black or white fridges and stoves. One of the major perks? No pesky finger prints to clean!!

When you decorate your home, it’s important to pick pieces that make you feel joy and comfort, regardless of what’s trendy. It is YOUR home after all!

One of the silver linings that has come out of lockdown life is the overall awareness and intention people have been able to bring back into their homes and daily lives to create more beautiful and purposeful spaces.
